Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools establishes the specific programs used to teach and meet the state objectives. For 2019-2020 CMS is rolling out its new EL Education literacy curriculum. It is composed of three distinct instructional pieces. At the heart of the curriculum are the hour-long Module Lessons. These include four modules, which span the full school year. The four modules allow students to build important content knowledge based on a compelling topic related to science, social studies, or literature. Each module uses rich, authentic texts throughout. The Reading Foundations Skills Block is a comprehensive time using a structured phonics approach to understand the behaviors related to the types of letter-sound connections students are able to make as they learn to read and write. Labs are an important feature of the curriculum because they support and extend student learning from the module lessons. They are designed to ensure that all students get the time to play and explore, become immersed in oral language and content knowledge, and practice skills and habits of character that they need—both to live joyfully and to be fully successful and proficient. The Labs are are complementary to module lessons and work together with them to accelerate the achievement of all students.
